This collection was born out of a pile of unused sketches initially composed for PRI’s This American Life. The songs began as short, sparse background pieces. Some stayed that way while others formed the seed for larger, fully fleshed-out compositions. Here the pendulum swings back, rhythmically and harmonically drawing on pop and rock structures. More electric guitar on this one but in a setting dominated by pitched percussion and clarinets and other acoustic instruments. Expanded and compressed forms create the album’s long-song, short-song format. As always, all live instruments played in real time.
