En Taiko is a Portland-based non-profit taiko education group that teaches taiko in schools. They are primarily based at Richmond Elementary, the Japanese immersion school in PPS.
I was commissioned by director Kazuyo Ito to compose a set of pieces that would combine traditional Japanese taiko drumming with Zimbabwean-style marimba ensemble. The musicians on this CD are in 4th-8th grade.
